A Preface by the Photographer

Judith Selby Lang of Forest Knolls writes:

“Seven years ago when my husband Richard Lang and I started cleaning Kehoe Beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore carrying bags and bags of plastic garbage away, we had no idea what we would find or what would happen. We picked up certain items in earnest; things that would show by their numbers and their commonness what is happening in the oceans around the world. We have collected over two tons of plastic that we have shaped into a variety of sculptures and installations.

We want people to know about the fun in the finding and we hope that if we show the stuff in an enticing way others might be inspired and start picking the plastic up too. Then, we would all get a clean beach and have interesting things to make art with.

As evidence of the tsunami of plastic effluvia that washes through our eyes and lives, ‘Home Again, Home Again’ is a chair, table and lamp covered with plastic. ‘The Party’s Over’ is a pile of balloon nibs collected over several years. ‘Assorted Stuff’ shows some of the highlights from our collection.”
