The Coastal Zone was established in the Coastal Act and represents the jurisdictional boundary of the Coastal Commission. Refinements occur over time and are voted on by the Commissioners.
The Coastal Act empowers local governments to establish a Local Coastal Program to administer the Coastal Act within their jurisdiction. The Commission works closely with local governments to uphold the Coastal Act.
