Shelter Cove, traditional Sinkyone land, is a part of the famous Lost Coast and is located right where the King Range meets the Pacific Ocean. This remote coastline has forested slopes, sheer cliffs, incredible views, dark sand beaches, as well as campgrounds, picnic tables, and is known for fishing and whale watching.
Surfers often ride the breaks nearby though much of that shoreline has rocky hazards. Salmon fishing, abalone hunting, and crabbing are all popular in this area and the sheer cliffs that adjoin the cove protect it from the northwest winds and waves. North of the cove you'll find Mal Coombs Park, Seal Rock, Abalone Point, Little Black Sands Beach, and Black Sands Beach. Shelter Cove is within the King Range National Conservation Area, with 70 miles of hiking trails available, including the Lost Coast Trail.
